Sellers Are Coming Out Ahead. Here’s What Australia’s Property Resale Data Actually Shows.
June 5, 2026

New data on property resale profit in Australia is painting a clear picture. Despite years of rate rises, cost of living pressure and media uncertainty, most homeowners who have sold recently are still coming out ahead. Often well ahead.

What the PropTrack data shows about property resale profit in Australia

Analysis by Eleanor Creagh at PropTrack looked at the locations with the highest total resale profit over the past twelve months. She says most homeowners are still selling at a profit, and loss-making sales remain rare across most markets.

In some of the strongest regions, more than 99% of resales made a profit. In a few of those areas, the median profit topped $600,000.

Why does property resale profit in Australia build over time?

The PropTrack data is striking but it is not surprising to anyone who understands how property investment works. These results do not happen overnight. They are the product of time in the market.

CoreLogic data supports this clearly. Properties that resold at a gross profit had a typical ownership period of 9.1 years for houses and 7.6 years for units. Properties that sold at a loss had typically been held for just 6.1 years.

The difference between a profitable sale and a loss-making one is often not the suburb, the property type or the timing of the purchase. It is how long the owner held it.

The long game beats timing the market

That is the key takeaway from the PropTrack analysis: these numbers build over time, not overnight. The long game beats timing the market.

For families thinking about property investment, this is one of the most important things to understand. The question is rarely “is now the perfect time to buy?” The more useful question is “am I in a position to hold for seven to ten years or more?”

Families who have held through rate rises, through uncertainty, through difficult headlines, they are the ones showing up in the 99% profit figures. Not because they timed anything perfectly, but because they stayed the course.

What this means for Australian property investors today

Australia’s property markets have seen years of solid price growth. The resale data reflects that, but only for those who gave their investment the time it needed to perform.

If you are thinking about property investment for your family, the data consistently points in the same direction: structure it well, choose the right location, and hold it for the long term.

We help everyday Australian families understand the property market clearly, so they can make informed decisions based on their own circumstances.
