The most liveable cities in Australia for 2026 have just been confirmed on the world stage.
Sydney, Melbourne and Perth have all been recognised in Monocle’s 2026 Quality of Life Survey, and Australia is the only country in the world to have three cities crack the global top 20.
What is Monocle’s Quality of Life Survey and how does it rank the world’s most liveable cities?
Monocle’s annual Quality of Life Survey is one of the most respected city liveability rankings in the world. Unlike surveys that focus purely on economic data and infrastructure, Monocle assesses what actually makes a city enjoyable to live in.
The 2026 survey ranked cities based on safety, connectivity, governance, green space, culture, retail and hospitality, with this year’s edition placing extra weight on three qualities: joy, ambition and security. Monocle assessed 75 cities worldwide.
Sydney: Australia’s highest ranked most liveable city in 2026 at number 5 in the world
Sydney achieved the highest Australian ranking, coming in at fifth in the world. The survey recognised Sydney for its major infrastructure projects, particularly transport infrastructure which makes the city easier to navigate. The rankings also praise the city’s natural beauty, particularly Sydney Harbour and its beaches.
Sydney beating out the vast majority of European cities, which dominate the top 20, is a significant result and reflects years of sustained investment in the city’s infrastructure and liveability.
Melbourne: ranked 18th most liveable city in the world in 2026
Melbourne is ranked 18th in the world and is recognised for its strong culinary reputation, cafe culture, sporting events, arts scene and access to nature.
It is the second consecutive year Melbourne has featured prominently in a major global liveability survey. Earlier in 2026, Time Out named Melbourne the best city in the world, a result that put the city on the global map in a different way entirely.
Perth: ranked 20th most liveable city in the world, tied with Kyoto
Perth is ranked equal 20th alongside Kyoto for its sunshine, beaches, riverfront spaces and access to nature. Monocle reserved its highest praise for what has happened to Perth’s city centre over the past decade, with infrastructure projects including Perth City Link and Elizabeth Quay having helped reconnect parts of the city.
Perth’s inclusion is a notable result for a city that has historically been underestimated on the global stage. The development of its CBD over the past decade is now being recognised at the highest level.
What the most liveable cities Australia 2026 rankings mean for property investors
Cities people want to live in attract more people. And more people needing homes means more demand for housing.
Sydney’s fifth place global ranking reinforces what the data already shows: it is one of the most sought-after cities on the planet. Melbourne’s 18th place result, combined with its Time Out number one ranking earlier this year, confirms the city is firing on multiple fronts. Perth’s CBD transformation and top 20 status point to a city that is investing in its future and attracting people as a result.
Liveability rankings are not just feel-good stories. They are demand signals. Cities that consistently attract people from around the world and across the country (because of their culture, infrastructure, safety and lifestyle) tend to see sustained housing demand over the long term.
For long-term property investors, understanding which cities people are choosing, and why, is one of the most important questions to ask.
